Upasampadā

Upasampadā is the formal act by which a candidate enters full membership in a Buddhist monastic community, undertaking its complete disciplinary code.

Kammavācā: A formal monastic proclamation used to enact community decisions under Buddhist disciplinary procedure. The ordination motion and announcements are delivered through this prescribed form.
Pabbajjā: The initial Buddhist monastic going-forth, which gives novice status rather than full ordination. It is the preliminary step that Upasampadā completes.
Bhikkhu: A fully ordained Buddhist monk, particularly in Theravāda usage. This is the male monastic status conferred through Upasampadā.
Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī: The Buddha’s maternal aunt and the first woman traditionally ordained as a Buddhist nun. Her ordination story anchors accounts of the beginnings of the bhikkhunī order.
Prātimokṣa: The Sanskrit term for the central code of Buddhist monastic rules. Ordination places monastics under the obligations and procedures of this rule code.
Saṅgha: The Buddhist community, especially the ordained monastic community in disciplinary contexts. A competent monastic assembly performs and validates the ordination.
Sāmaṇera: A male novice in Buddhist monastic life who has not yet received full ordination. In traditions requiring novice training, this is the candidate’s status before full ordination.
Bhikkhunī: A fully ordained Buddhist nun, particularly in Theravāda usage. Its lineage and availability have been disputed and revived differently across traditions.
Garu-dhammas: A set of eight rules presented in some Buddhist texts as conditions for the establishment of the nuns’ order. They frame a foundational narrative about women’s admission to full monastic life.
Poṣadha: A Buddhist observance day on which monastics gather for communal practice and, in many traditions, rule recitation. Full ordination makes participation in the monastic rule-recitation community relevant.
