Knowra Upaya Upaya Upaya, or skillful means, is the Buddhist principle of adapting teachings and methods to the capacities and circumstances of beings. It treats methods as context-sensitive means toward liberation rather than ends in themselves.
Lotus Sutra : A Mahayana Buddhist scripture that presents the One Vehicle and uses parables to explain provisional teachings. Its parables show how different teachings can guide beings toward one ultimate path.
Mahayana : A broad Buddhist movement whose traditions emphasize the bodhisattva path and the aspiration to buddhahood for all beings. Upaya became especially prominent in Mahayana accounts of teaching and the bodhisattva path.
Bodhisattva : A being who seeks buddhahood and cultivates compassion and wisdom for the benefit of all beings. The bodhisattva is the principal Mahayana agent who practices skillful means.
Buddhist ethics : The principles and practices governing conduct in Buddhist traditions, including precepts, intention, and compassion. Skillful means remains answerable to ethical aims rather than licensing any effective tactic.
Parable of the Burning House : A Lotus Sutra parable in which a father uses promises of different carts to lead children from a burning house. The father’s tailored promises exemplify a method suited to the children’s immediate capacities.
Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra : The Sanskrit title of the Lotus Sutra, a Mahayana scripture composed and expanded over several centuries. Its chapter on skillful means provides a central scriptural treatment of the concept.
Avalokiteśvara : A bodhisattva of compassion who appears in diverse forms to aid beings, especially in East Asian Buddhism. Stories of changing form illustrate adapting help to those in need.
Buddhist gradualism : The view that liberation develops through a staged path of practices and realizations. Gradualism emphasizes ordered stages, while upaya emphasizes adapting methods to circumstances.
Three Vehicles : The paths of śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas, presented in Mahayana Buddhism as distinct vehicles toward awakening. The Lotus Sutra treats these differentiated paths as provisional accommodations.
Upāyakauśalya Sūtra : A Mahayana sutra focused on the bodhisattva’s use of skillful means. It develops upaya through stories of compassionate, context-sensitive action.
