Upland and lowland

Upland and lowland are relative landscape terms for higher-lying and lower-lying land. The distinction often corresponds to differences in relief, drainage, climate, ecosystems, and land use.

Elevation: The height of a location above a reference level, commonly mean sea level. Relative elevation is the basic measure separating higher uplands from lower lowlands.
Erosion: The wearing away and transport of rock or soil by water, wind, ice, or gravity. Erosion commonly lowers uplands and transfers material toward lowlands.
Land use: The ways people manage and occupy Earth's surface for activities such as farming, housing, and conservation. Terrain and drainage influence which uses are practical in uplands and lowlands.
Mountain: A large natural elevation rising conspicuously above surrounding terrain, typically with steep slopes and a summit. Mountains are a distinctive upland landform, not a synonym for all upland terrain.
Topography: The arrangement of natural and human-made features on Earth's surface, including elevation and landforms. Topography includes the broader terrain patterns that give upland and lowland their shape.
Sedimentation: The settling and accumulation of particles carried by water, wind, or ice. Sediment eroded from higher ground can build lowland plains and river deltas.
Agriculture: The cultivation of plants and raising of animals for food, materials, and other products. Soil, slope, and water availability create different farming opportunities across the two settings.
Plain: A broad area of relatively level land with little variation in elevation. Plains are often lowlands, but flatness describes shape rather than height.
Relief: The difference in elevation between the high and low points of a land surface. Relief helps distinguish rugged uplands from flatter lowlands.
River: A natural flowing watercourse that carries water across land toward a sea, lake, or another river. Rivers connect upland source areas to lowland channels and floodplains.
