Urabi revolt

The Urabi revolt was an Egyptian nationalist and military uprising against foreign influence and the Khedival government from 1879 to 1882. Its defeat brought British occupation of Egypt.

Egyptian debt crisis: A fiscal crisis caused by Egypt’s heavy borrowing and debt repayments, which led European powers to supervise its finances. European control of Egypt’s finances fueled opposition to foreign influence.
Ahmed Urabi: An Egyptian army officer and political leader who headed the revolt against foreign influence and Khedive Tawfiq. He emerged as the movement’s principal military and political spokesman.
Mahmud Sami al-Barudi: An Egyptian poet, army officer, and politician who served as prime minister during the Urabi revolt. He joined Urabi’s leadership and helped form a government during the crisis.
Suez Canal: A canal across the Isthmus of Suez connecting the Mediterranean and Red seas, opened in 1869. British leaders treated control of the canal route as a strategic concern during the intervention.

Anglo-Egyptian Condominium: The joint British and Egyptian administration of Sudan established in 1899. It extended British imperial influence from occupied Egypt into Sudan.
Khedive Ismail: Ruler of Egypt from 1863 to 1879, whose spending and borrowing contributed to the country’s debt crisis. His removal and the debt crisis preceded the revolt.
Alexandria bombardment: The British naval bombardment of Alexandria on 11 July 1882, followed by British occupation of the city. Britain intervened militarily after tensions escalated over Alexandria’s defenses.
