Urbain Le Verrier

Urbain Le Verrier (1811–1877) was a French mathematician and astronomer who predicted Neptune’s existence and position from irregularities in Uranus’s orbit.

Discovery of Neptune: The 1846 identification of Neptune after mathematical predictions indicated its position beyond Uranus. Johann Galle found Neptune near the position Le Verrier calculated.
Perturbation theory: A set of mathematical methods for approximating a system’s behavior when it differs slightly from a solvable model. Le Verrier treated Uranus’s deviations as small effects of an unknown gravitational influence.
John Couch Adams: An English mathematician who independently calculated the position of a hypothetical planet beyond Uranus. Adams reached a similar prediction before Le Verrier, though their calculations and routes to publication differed.
