Urban wildlife

Urban wildlife consists of wild animals that live in or use cities and other human-dominated landscapes, adapting to environments shaped by people.

Urban ecology: The study of ecological processes and interactions within urban environments. It explains how built landscapes and human activity shape wildlife communities.
Human–wildlife conflict: Negative interactions between people and wild animals that cause harm or perceived harm. Property damage, disease concerns, and attacks drive many responses to city animals.
Rock pigeon: A domesticated form of the rock dove that thrives in cities worldwide. Its nesting on buildings and use of discarded food exemplify urban living.
Biotic homogenization: The increasing similarity of species communities across places. Urban environments often favor the same adaptable species while excluding specialists.
Domestication: The multigenerational process by which humans shape populations of organisms for human purposes. Urban wildlife uses human settings but is not necessarily domesticated.
Synanthrope: An organism that benefits from living near humans without being domesticated. Many city-dwelling wild animals exploit resources created by people.
Wildlife rehabilitation: The care of injured, sick, or orphaned wild animals with the aim of release. Urban rescue centers handle animals harmed by traffic, buildings, and domestic pets.
Red fox: A highly adaptable canid found across much of the Northern Hemisphere. Urban foxes adjust their activity and diets to human-dominated habitats.
Road ecology: The study of ecological effects caused by roads and traffic. Vehicle collisions and barriers make roads major pressures on urban animals.
Feral animal: A domesticated animal living outside human care and reproducing or surviving independently. Feral animals may live in cities, but their domesticated ancestry distinguishes them from native wildlife.
