Urbanization in South Korea

Urbanization in South Korea is the growth and concentration of the population in urban areas, especially since the mid-twentieth century. It has been shaped by industrialization, migration, and the expansion of metropolitan regions.

South Korean industrialization: The transformation of South Korea into an industrial economy, accelerating from the 1960s through export-led development. Factory and service-sector jobs drew workers from rural areas into cities.
Korean War: The 1950–1953 conflict between North and South Korea, ending in an armistice rather than a peace treaty. War-related displacement and destruction reshaped settlement patterns before the urban boom.
