Urethritis

Urethritis is inflammation of the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. It commonly causes painful or frequent urination and may result from infection or irritation.

Chlamydia: Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. This bacterium is a frequent cause of infectious urethritis.
Dysuria: Dysuria is pain, burning, or discomfort during urination. It is a common symptom that prompts evaluation for urethritis.
Epididymitis: Epididymitis is inflammation of the epididymis, the coiled tube behind the testicle. Infection associated with urethritis can spread to the epididymis.
Cystitis: Cystitis is inflammation of the urinary bladder, commonly caused by bacterial infection. Both conditions can cause painful urination, but they affect different parts of the urinary tract.
Gonorrhea: Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Gonococcal urethritis is a distinct, clinically important form of the inflammation.
Urethral discharge: Urethral discharge is fluid exiting the urethral opening that is not urine or semen. Its appearance and presence can help clinicians assess suspected urethritis.
Prostatitis: Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland. Urethral infection may accompany or contribute to infection involving the prostate.
Pyelonephritis: Pyelonephritis is infection and inflammation of the kidney and renal pelvis. Fever and flank pain suggest upper urinary tract infection rather than isolated urethritis.
Mycoplasma genitalium: Mycoplasma genitalium is a bacterium that can cause sexually transmitted infections of the urogenital tract. It can cause persistent or recurrent urethritis, particularly after initial treatment.
Nucleic acid amplification test: A nucleic acid amplification test detects pathogen genetic material in a specimen. It is commonly used to test for gonorrhea and chlamydia in suspected urethritis.
