Urho Kekkonen

Urho Kekkonen (1900–1986) was Finland’s president from 1956 to 1982. He shaped the country’s Cold War policy of neutrality while maintaining close relations with the Soviet Union.

Finlandization: A policy of accommodating a powerful neighbor’s interests while retaining formal independence and a market economy. The term captures the constraints and compromises associated with Finland’s Soviet-era foreign policy.
