Urinary bladder

The urinary bladder is a hollow, muscular organ that stores urine from the kidneys and releases it through the urethra during urination.

Detrusor muscle: The smooth muscle layer of the bladder wall that contracts during urination. Its contraction generates the force that empties the bladder.
Urinary system: The organs and ducts that produce, transport, store, and eliminate urine. The bladder is the storage organ within this broader system.
Urinary tract infection: An infection affecting any part of the urinary tract. Infection can involve the bladder, causing cystitis and urinary symptoms.
Gallbladder: A small organ that stores and concentrates bile produced by the liver. Both are hollow storage organs, but they hold different fluids and empty into different ducts.
Urothelium: A stretchable epithelial lining that forms a protective barrier in the urinary tract. Its cells accommodate filling while limiting contact between urine and underlying tissue.
Kidney: An organ that filters blood and produces urine. Urine reaches the bladder from the kidneys through the ureters.
Cystitis: Inflammation of the urinary bladder, often caused by bacterial infection. It is a common condition centered on the bladder lining.
Stomach: A muscular digestive organ that stores and mixes food with gastric secretions. Like the bladder, it expands and contracts, but handles food rather than urine.
Ureterovesical junction: The point where a ureter enters the urinary bladder. Its angled passage helps prevent urine from flowing backward toward the kidneys.
Ureter: A muscular tube that carries urine from a kidney to the urinary bladder. The ureters deliver urine for storage.
