Knowra Urology Urology Urology is the medical specialty that diagnoses and treats diseases of the urinary tract and male reproductive system, using medical and surgical care.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia : Noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that can obstruct urine flow. A common condition urologists assess and treat, especially in older men.
Cystoscopy : Endoscopic examination of the urethra and bladder using a thin camera-equipped instrument. It lets urologists inspect urinary tract symptoms and obtain tissue samples.
Urinary system : The organs that produce, store, and eliminate urine: kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Its anatomy defines the urinary tract conditions within urology’s remit.
Maximilian Nitze : A German physician who developed a practical cystoscope in the late nineteenth century. His instrument helped establish direct endoscopic examination as a urologic method.
Urinary diversion : A surgical method that reroutes urine when normal bladder storage or passage is unavailable. It can restore urine drainage after bladder removal or severe urinary tract injury.

Male reproductive system : The organs involved in producing sperm and male sex hormones and enabling reproduction. Urology also treats diseases of these organs, including the prostate and testes.
Antonie Jean Desormeaux : A French surgeon who developed an early endoscope for examining the urinary tract. His work preceded the modern cystoscope and helped shape endourology.
Fertility preservation : Methods used to protect or store reproductive potential before treatments that may impair fertility. Cancer surgery and therapy can affect reproductive function, making preservation relevant to urologic care.
