Uruguay

Uruguay is a country on the southeastern coast of South America, between Brazil and Argentina. It became an independent state in 1828 after the Cisplatine War.

Cisplatine War: A war fought from 1825 to 1828 over control of the region that became Uruguay. Its settlement led to Uruguay’s recognition as an independent state.
Montevideo: Uruguay’s capital and largest city, situated on the northern shore of the Río de la Plata. It became the country’s political center and principal port.
José Batlle y Ordóñez: A Uruguayan president whose governments in the early twentieth century expanded secular reforms and social welfare. His reform program helped establish Uruguay’s distinctive modern state.
Uruguayan agriculture: The cultivation and livestock production that form a major part of Uruguay’s economy and exports. Beef, dairy, and crops link Uruguay’s land use to global markets.
Uruguay in the 1970s and 1980s: A period marked by military rule from 1973 to 1985, political repression, and the return to democracy. The dictatorship and transition reshaped institutions and public memory.
Cisplatina: A province of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves, later incorporated into the Empire of Brazil. This province was the territory whose separation produced Uruguay.
Río de la Plata: A broad estuary formed by the Paraná and Uruguay rivers between Argentina and Uruguay. It defines Uruguay’s southern coastline and connects the country to Atlantic trade.
José Mujica: A Uruguayan politician who served as president from 2010 to 2015 after decades in left-wing politics. His presidency brought international attention to Uruguay’s political culture and policy choices.
Uruguay Round: The 1986–1994 multilateral trade negotiations that created the World Trade Organization. The negotiations were named for their launch in Punta del Este, Uruguay.
Uruguayan Constitution: The body of constitutional law establishing Uruguay’s government and fundamental institutions. Constitutional rules frame the country’s democratic system and presidential government.
