Uruk period

A period in southern Mesopotamia, approximately 4000–3100 BCE, marked by the rise of cities, expanding trade, monumental institutions, and the earliest writing.

Uruk: An ancient Mesopotamian city whose late fourth-millennium BCE growth gave its name to the Uruk period. Its expanding settlement and monumental precincts exemplify the period’s urban transformation.
