Knowra Uruk Uruk Uruk was an ancient city in southern Mesopotamia, near modern Warka in Iraq. It became one of the world’s earliest major urban centers and a center of writing, monumental architecture, and political power.
Uruk period : An archaeological period in southern Mesopotamia, about 4000–3100 BCE, marked by expanding settlements, institutions, and distinctive material culture. The city’s early expansion gave its name to this formative period.
Cuneiform : A writing system used in ancient Mesopotamia, made with wedge-shaped signs impressed into clay. Some of the earliest known cuneiform tablets come from Uruk.
Temple economy : An economic system in which temple institutions organize production, storage, labor, and the redistribution of goods. Temple precincts at Uruk managed resources and coordinated work at a large scale.

Uruk accounting tablets : Administrative clay tablets from late fourth-millennium BCE Uruk, recording goods, labor, and institutional transactions. These tablets reveal how Uruk’s institutions tracked resources before and during early writing.
Proto-cuneiform : The earliest known stage of cuneiform writing, used in late fourth-millennium BCE Mesopotamia mainly for administrative records. Uruk’s accounting needs helped foster this early system of written signs.
Inanna : A Mesopotamian goddess associated with love, warfare, and political power, worshipped at Uruk. Uruk’s Eanna precinct was a major center of her worship.
History of writing : The development of systems for recording language and information, from early marks to scripts used across societies. Uruk’s tablets provide some of the earliest evidence for writing.
