Utah
Utah is a western U.S. state whose landscapes range from the Great Salt Lake and Wasatch Range to the Colorado Plateau and its red-rock deserts.
Great Salt Lake: A large, shallow, saline lake in northern Utah, separated from the ocean and fed by rivers. Its changing shoreline and salinity make it Utah’s most distinctive lake.
Basin and Range Province: A western North American region of alternating mountain ranges and desert basins formed by crustal extension. Its basins and ranges define much of western Utah.
Mormon pioneers: Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who migrated west to the Great Salt Lake Valley beginning in 1847. Their settlement founded Salt Lake City and established a lasting cultural presence.
Utah’s economy: The mix of industries, services, and public-sector activity that produces income and employment in Utah. Mining, technology, tourism, and services reflect different parts of Utah’s landscape and history.
Arizona: A southwestern U.S. state known for desert landscapes, the Grand Canyon, and the Colorado River. Arizona shares Utah’s Colorado Plateau but has a warmer climate and different settlement history.
Wasatch Range: A mountain range in north-central Utah forming part of the eastern edge of the Great Basin. The range rises beside the populous Wasatch Front and shapes its climate and recreation.
Great Basin: An arid region of the western United States whose streams drain internally rather than reaching the sea. Western Utah lies within this closed drainage region.
Deseret: A proposed territory organized by Latter-day Saint settlers in 1849, encompassing a much larger area than present-day Utah. Its territorial ambitions preceded Utah’s boundaries and statehood.
Utah mining: The extraction of minerals and fuels in Utah, including copper, coal, uranium, and potash. Utah’s geology supports a long-running mining sector.
Nevada: A western U.S. state characterized by arid basins, mountain ranges, and extensive public lands. Nevada shares Utah’s Great Basin terrain but developed under a different political and economic pattern.
