Uterine contraction

A tightening of the uterine muscular wall caused by coordinated activity of smooth-muscle cells. Contractions occur during menstruation and labor and can also be induced or suppressed with medication.

Myometrium: The smooth-muscle layer of the uterine wall that generates contractions. Its muscle cells produce the force that tightens the uterus.
Labor induction: The initiation of labor by medical or mechanical methods before it begins spontaneously. Induction aims to produce effective contractions that lead to cervical change and birth.
Smooth muscle: Involuntary muscle tissue found in structures such as blood vessels, airways, and the uterus. Uterine contractions are a specialized activity of smooth muscle.
Braxton Hicks contractions: Intermittent uterine tightenings during pregnancy that do not produce progressive cervical change. They can feel like labor contractions but do not normally establish labor.
Oxytocin: A peptide hormone that promotes uterine contractions and milk ejection. It increases contraction strength and helps coordinate labor.
Oxytocin (medication): A synthetic form of oxytocin administered to stimulate uterine contractions. Intravenous oxytocin is used to induce or augment labor.
Uterus: A hollow muscular organ in which an embryo can implant and a fetus can develop. Its muscular wall contracts in reproductive processes.
Menstrual cramps: Painful sensations associated with menstruation, often caused by uterine contractions and prostaglandins. They are a common painful expression of uterine activity outside labor.
Prostaglandin: A group of lipid signaling molecules that act locally in tissues and influence inflammation, pain, and smooth-muscle activity. Prostaglandins help initiate labor and contribute to menstrual cramping.
Misoprostol: A synthetic prostaglandin E1 analogue used for several obstetric and gynecologic purposes. It can ripen the cervix and stimulate uterine contractions.
