Utopian socialism

An early socialist tradition that proposed cooperative communities and social reform as routes to an egalitarian society, before Marxist theories of scientific socialism.

Enlightenment: An intellectual movement emphasizing reason, criticism of inherited authority, and social reform, especially in eighteenth-century Europe. Its faith in rational reform shaped early socialist plans for reorganizing society.
Cooperative: An organization owned and democratically controlled by the people who use or work in it. Cooperatives offered a working model for shared ownership and collective decision-making.
Étienne Cabet: A French socialist who described an egalitarian communist society in his novel Voyage en Icarie. His literary blueprint inspired followers to attempt a real communal settlement.
Scientific socialism: A term Friedrich Engels used for Marxist socialism, presented as an analysis of historical and economic development. It names the approach that Engels set against utopian socialist blueprints.
Cooperative movement: A broad movement promoting businesses and institutions owned and governed by their members. Owenite advocacy helped establish cooperation as a practical alternative to investor-owned enterprise.
Industrial Revolution: The transition to mechanized production and factory economies that began in Britain in the eighteenth century. Industrial poverty and inequality made cooperative alternatives urgent to early socialists.
Intentional community: A group living arrangement organized around shared values, goals, or resources. Utopian socialists treated deliberately designed communities as prototypes for wider social change.
Victor Considerant: A French Fourierist writer and politician who promoted cooperative communities and social reform. He carried Fourier's proposals into political debate and helped organize a Texas settlement.
Marxism: A political and economic theory associated with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, centered on class struggle and historical materialism. Marxism explained socialism through structural conflict rather than advocates' ideal designs.
Consumer cooperative: A business owned by its customers, who share control and may receive a portion of its surplus. The Rochdale model gave cooperative ideals a replicable form in everyday commerce.
