Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is a state in northern India, with Lucknow as its capital. It has the largest population of any Indian state.

Lucknow: Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh and its largest city. The state government is based in this historic administrative and cultural center.
United Provinces: United Provinces was the British Indian province renamed Uttar Pradesh after India became independent. It was the immediate administrative predecessor of the present state.
Jawaharlal Nehru: Jawaharlal Nehru was India’s first prime minister and a leading figure in the independence movement. He was born in Allahabad, now Prayagraj, and represented the region in national politics.
Taj Mahal: The Taj Mahal is a white-marble mausoleum in Agra, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the seventeenth century. It anchors Uttar Pradesh’s heritage tourism and is among India’s most recognized monuments.
Bihar: Bihar is a state in eastern India, bordered by Uttar Pradesh to the west. The two densely populated neighboring states share the Ganges plain but have separate governments.
Ganges: The Ganges is a major river of northern India, flowing from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal. Its basin shapes settlement, agriculture, and pilgrimage across much of Uttar Pradesh.
British Raj: The British Raj was the period of direct British rule over much of the Indian subcontinent, from 1858 to 1947. Colonial administration shaped the territorial unit that became Uttar Pradesh.
Indira Gandhi: Indira Gandhi was India’s prime minister from 1966 to 1977 and from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. Her political base and parliamentary constituency were in Uttar Pradesh.
Kumbh Mela: Kumbh Mela is a major Hindu pilgrimage festival held at rotating sacred river sites in India. Prayagraj hosts one of its principal gatherings at the Ganges–Yamuna confluence.
Madhya Pradesh: Madhya Pradesh is a state in central India, south of Uttar Pradesh. Their shared boundary contrasts the northern Ganges plain with central India’s plateau and forests.
