Uyghur Khaganate

The Uyghur Khaganate was a Turkic nomadic empire centered in Mongolia from 744 to 840. It controlled parts of Central Asia and fell after a Kyrgyz invasion.

Second Turkic Khaganate: A Turkic empire that ruled much of the Mongolian steppe from 682 to 744. Its defeat by the Uyghurs opened the way for the new khaganate.
Khagan: A supreme ruler's title used by several Inner Asian empires. Uyghur rulers used this title to assert authority over allied tribes and territories.
Turkic peoples: A diverse group of peoples whose languages belong to the Turkic language family. The khaganate was one of several Turkic polities competing for steppe authority.
Yenisei Kyrgyz Khaganate: A medieval Turkic polity centered in the upper Yenisei region of Siberia. Its forces captured the Uyghur capital and ended the khaganate in 840.
Basmyls: A people of Inner Asia who briefly held power in Mongolia before the Uyghur rise. Their revolt helped bring down the Second Turkic Khaganate and enabled Uyghur ascendancy.
Tang dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 618 to 907. The khaganate traded military support for Chinese goods and diplomatic recognition.
Mongolian Plateau: A highland region spanning much of present-day Mongolia and adjacent areas. This plateau supplied the khaganate's core territory and pastoral landscape.
Kyrgyz people: A Turkic people with historical roots in Inner Asia. Kyrgyz forces displaced Uyghur rule in Mongolia and altered the balance of steppe power.
Karluks: A confederation of Turkic peoples that became influential across Central Asia. They joined the Basmyls and Uyghurs in the revolt that ended the Second Turkic Khaganate.
An Lushan Rebellion: A devastating rebellion against Tang rule that lasted from 755 to 763. Uyghur forces aided the Tang court's effort to recover its capitals.
