Václav Havel

Václav Havel (1936–2011) was a Czech playwright, essayist, dissident, and statesman who became president of Czechoslovakia and then the Czech Republic.

Charter 77: A Czechoslovak civic initiative founded in 1977 to call on the state to respect human rights. Havel became one of its leading spokesmen and was repeatedly persecuted for his involvement.
