Vacuum energy

Vacuum energy is the energy of the lowest-energy state of quantum fields, which can remain nonzero even when no particles are present.

Quantum vacuum: The lowest-energy state of quantum fields, containing no particles as defined by those fields. Vacuum energy is a property assigned to this particle-free field state.
Cosmological constant problem: The discrepancy between quantum-field estimates of vacuum energy and the small value inferred from cosmic expansion. It is the central challenge raised by treating vacuum energy as gravitationally active.
Max Planck: A German physicist whose work on blackbody radiation introduced energy quantization. Planck’s quantization began the framework from which zero-point energy followed.
Vacuum catastrophe: A name for the enormous mismatch between naive quantum estimates of vacuum energy and its observed gravitational value. It highlights the scale of the cosmological constant problem.
Dynamical Casimir effect: The production of real photons when a boundary condition or effective cavity boundary changes rapidly. Changing allowed vacuum modes can convert field fluctuations into observable radiation.
Zero-point energy: The minimum energy a quantum system retains because its observables cannot all be sharply fixed. It describes the residual energy of field modes in their ground state.
Cosmological constant: A constant term in Einstein’s gravitational equations that acts like uniform energy density in empty space. It can represent vacuum energy’s gravitational effect on cosmic expansion.
Albert Einstein: A theoretical physicist who developed special and general relativity and helped establish quantum theory. His gravitational equations make uniform energy in empty space physically consequential.
Supersymmetry: A proposed symmetry relating bosons and fermions, with each particle paired to a partner of different spin. Exact boson–fermion cancellations could reduce vacuum contributions, but observed symmetry breaking leaves a mismatch.
Unruh effect: The prediction that an accelerated observer detects a thermal bath in the quantum vacuum. It shows that the particle content assigned to a vacuum depends on the observer’s motion.
