Vandal Kingdom

A Germanic kingdom established by the Vandals in North Africa in the fifth century. It controlled Carthage and surrounding territories until Byzantine conquest in 534.

Vandal migration: The movement of Vandal groups from central Europe through Gaul and Hispania into North Africa. The migration across the Strait of Gibraltar brought the Vandals into the region they would rule.

Justinian I: The Byzantine emperor from 527 to 565 who ordered the reconquest of North Africa. His restoration policy brought the Vandal Kingdom back under imperial rule.
Vandal fleet: The naval forces used by the Vandal Kingdom to control sea routes and raid Mediterranean coasts. Naval power let the kingdom project force beyond its African territory.
King Gaiseric: The Vandal king who led his people into North Africa and ruled from 428 to 477. His conquests and diplomacy established the kingdom’s power.
