Vanuatu independence

Vanuatu became an independent state on 30 July 1980, ending the joint British and French administration of the New Hebrides.

New Hebrides: The archipelago administered jointly by Britain and France before becoming Vanuatu. Its colonial administration and political divisions set the stage for independence.
1979 New Hebrides general election: An election that gave the Vanua'aku Pati a majority in the New Hebrides Representative Assembly. The result established the political authority that negotiated independence.
Republic of Vanuatu: A sovereign island republic in the southwestern Pacific, formed from the New Hebrides in 1980. It is the state created by the independence settlement.
Fiji independence: Fiji became independent from Britain on 10 October 1970. Unlike Vanuatu, Fiji moved from a single colonial administration to independence.
