Vardenafil

Vardenafil is an oral prescription medicine that inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). It treats erectile dysfunction by helping increase blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation.

Phosphodiesterase type 5: An enzyme that breaks down cyclic guanosine monophosphate, regulating smooth-muscle relaxation and blood-vessel dilation. Vardenafil blocks this enzyme, slowing the breakdown of the signal that supports penile blood flow.
Erectile dysfunction: Persistent difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual activity. This is the condition vardenafil is prescribed to treat.
Sildenafil: A PDE5-inhibiting medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It is a close alternative with a longer clinical history and similar core mechanism.

Tadalafil: A long-acting PDE5 inhibitor used for erectile dysfunction and certain urinary symptoms. Its substantially longer duration distinguishes it from vardenafil.
Flushing: Temporary skin redness and warmth caused by increased blood flow near the skin. Vardenafil can cause flushing as blood vessels widen.
GlaxoSmithKline: A British pharmaceutical company involved in the development and marketing of medicines. The company partnered in vardenafil’s development and marketed it as Levitra.
