Vasily I of Moscow

Vasily I Dmitriyevich was Grand Prince of Moscow from 1389 to 1425. The son of Dmitry Donskoy, he expanded Moscow’s territory and strengthened its influence while navigating relations with the Golden Horde.

Dmitry Donskoy: Dmitry Donskoy was Grand Prince of Moscow from 1359 to 1389 and led the Russian victory at the Battle of Kulikovo. Vasily inherited Moscow’s principality from his father, whose victories had raised its standing.
Tokhtamysh: Tokhtamysh was a khan of the Golden Horde who briefly reunited much of the Horde and sacked Moscow in 1382. Vasily’s early political fortunes were shaped by Tokhtamysh’s power and the aftermath of Moscow’s sack.
Yuri of Zvenigorod: Yuri of Zvenigorod was a son of Dmitry Donskoy who challenged his nephew Vasily II for the Moscow throne. Vasily I’s succession arrangements became the basis of Yuri’s later claim.
Battle of Kulikovo: The Battle of Kulikovo was a 1380 victory by forces led by Dmitry Donskoy against a Mongol-Tatar army. Unlike his father’s celebrated battlefield victory, Vasily’s influence grew chiefly through diplomacy and expansion.
Sofia of Lithuania: Sofia of Lithuania was the daughter of Grand Duke Vytautas and the wife of Vasily I of Moscow. Her marriage linked Vasily’s dynasty to Lithuania’s ruling family.
Khan's yarlyk: A khan’s yarlyk was a decree granting authority or privileges within the Mongol imperial system. Recognition from the Horde legitimized Vasily’s rule over the northeastern Rus' lands.
Vasily II of Moscow: Vasily II was Grand Prince of Moscow from 1425 to 1462, though his reign was interrupted by civil war and captivity. His accession after Vasily I’s death triggered a prolonged dynastic conflict.

Nizhny Novgorod-Suzdal: The Principality of Nizhny Novgorod-Suzdal was a northeastern Rus' state that came under Moscow’s control in the early fifteenth century. Vasily’s acquisition of this principality extended Moscow’s reach eastward.
