Vector graphics

Images represented by mathematically defined paths, shapes, and text rather than fixed grids of pixels. They can be resized without losing edge sharpness.

Vector path: A geometric outline defined by points and segments in a vector image. Paths form the outlines from which vector shapes are built.
Coordinate system: A framework that assigns numerical coordinates to positions in space. Vector paths locate their points within a coordinate system.
Scalable Vector Graphics: An XML-based format for describing two-dimensional vector graphics. SVG is a widely used format for web illustrations, icons, and diagrams.
Raster graphics: Images represented as grids of pixels, each storing color or other image data. Raster graphics preserve pixel-level detail but can become jagged when enlarged.
Computer graphics: The creation, manipulation, and display of images using computers. Vector graphics are one major representation within computer graphics.
Bézier curve: A parametric curve shaped by control points and used to draw smooth contours. Cubic Bézier curves let vector paths represent smooth bends with few points.
Euclidean geometry: The study of points, lines, distances, angles, and shapes in flat space. Vector illustrations use familiar geometric primitives and relationships.
PostScript: A page-description language that represents text and graphics for printing and display. PostScript helped bring scalable outlines and graphics into professional printing.
Bitmap image: A digital image whose appearance is encoded as a rectangular array of pixels. A bitmap stores sampled picture data rather than scalable geometric descriptions.
Outline font: A digital font whose glyphs are defined by outlines rather than fixed pixel patterns. Outline fonts carried scalable vector descriptions into everyday text rendering.
