Velvet Revolution

The Velvet Revolution was the largely peaceful overthrow of Communist rule in Czechoslovakia in November and December 1989, leading to a democratic government.

January 1989 protests: A series of demonstrations in Prague commemorating Jan Palach that authorities repeatedly dispersed. The crackdown on these earlier protests exposed the regime’s continuing repression before the November uprising.
Václav Havel: A Czech playwright and dissident who became the leading public figure of the Velvet Revolution and president of Czechoslovakia. He led Civic Forum’s negotiations and became the revolution’s most prominent political beneficiary.
Prague Spring: A 1968 reform movement in Czechoslovakia that sought to create “socialism with a human face” before Soviet-led forces crushed it. Its defeat left a legacy of reformist hopes and political repression that shaped later dissent.
Velvet Divorce: The peaceful dissolution of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on January 1, 1993. The post-revolutionary state ultimately separated through negotiation rather than violence.
Romanian Revolution: The violent overthrow of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s Communist government in Romania in December 1989. Unlike the Velvet Revolution, Romania’s regime change involved armed conflict and many deaths.
November 17, 1989 demonstration: A student march in Prague marking International Students’ Day, violently dispersed by police. Its suppression became the immediate trigger for nationwide protests.
Alexander Dubček: A Slovak Communist reformer who led Czechoslovakia during the 1968 Prague Spring. His return to public life linked the 1989 uprising with the earlier reform movement.
Charter 77: A Czechoslovak dissident initiative founded in 1977 that demanded the government respect human rights commitments. Its signatories formed a durable opposition network that helped organize in 1989.
Czechoslovak parliamentary election, 1990: The first free parliamentary election in Czechoslovakia since 1946, held in June 1990. The vote converted the revolution’s transfer of power into an elected mandate.
Hungarian Revolution of 1956: A popular uprising against Soviet-backed rule in Hungary that Soviet forces crushed in 1956. Its violent suppression contrasted with the Soviet Union’s nonintervention in Czechoslovakia in 1989.
