Venetian–Genoese Wars

A series of medieval naval and commercial conflicts between Venice and Genoa over trade and control of the eastern Mediterranean.

War of Chioggia: A war between Venice and Genoa from 1378 to 1381, ending with Venice's victory at Chioggia. Its battles formed the final major conflict in the series.
Arsenal of Venice: A state-run shipbuilding complex that supplied Venice's fleet and standardized its maritime production. Its capacity helped Venice replace ships and sustain prolonged naval campaigns.
Fourth Crusade: A crusade launched in 1202 that culminated in the sack of Constantinople by crusaders in 1204. Its aftermath reshaped access to Byzantine ports and privileges contested by Venice and Genoa.
Genoese colonies: Overseas settlements and commercial outposts established or controlled by Genoa across the Mediterranean and Black Sea. Their contested positions were both prizes and vulnerabilities in the wars.
Republic of Genoa: An independent maritime state centered on Genoa that flourished from the Middle Ages until its incorporation into France in 1797. Its political and naval system provided the rival power in the wars.
Battle of Curzola: A 1298 naval battle in which Genoa defeated Venice near the Dalmatian island of Korčula. The defeat exposed Venice's vulnerability before later rounds of fighting.
Genoese navy: The naval forces maintained by the Republic of Genoa for warfare, commerce, and protection of maritime routes. Its fleets carried Genoa's challenge to Venetian shipping and overseas possessions.
Byzantine–Genoese Treaty of Nymphaeum: A 1261 agreement granting Genoa extensive commercial privileges in the Byzantine Empire in exchange for naval support. It strengthened Genoese access to eastern trade and sharpened Venetian competition.
Venetian colonial empire: Venice's network of overseas territories, ports, and dependencies across the Adriatic and eastern Mediterranean. The wars tested Venice's ability to defend this maritime network.
Venetian–Ottoman Wars: A series of conflicts between Venice and the Ottoman Empire over territory, trade, and maritime power. These later wars shifted Venice's eastern rivalry from Genoa to a growing imperial power.
