Republic of Venice: A maritime republic centered on Venice that governed territories in the Adriatic and mainland Italy for centuries. Its long independence supplies the movement’s central historical reference point.
Venetian regionalism: Political advocacy for greater self-government and recognition of Veneto’s regional identity within Italy. It is the broader, usually less separatist current alongside Venetian nationalism.
Venetian separatism: Advocacy for separating Venice or Veneto from Italy to establish an independent state. It is the movement’s most sovereignty-focused current, distinct from autonomy within Italy.
Veneto regional government: The elected institutions that govern the Italian region of Veneto under Italy’s constitutional system. Its powers and decisions are the immediate institutional stakes of autonomy campaigns.
Fall of the Republic of Venice: The end of the Venetian Republic in 1797, when Napoleon’s forces occupied the city and its territories. The republic’s sudden end marks the loss of the sovereignty later nationalists invoke.
Lega Veneta: A regionalist political party founded in Veneto in 1980 and later associated with the Lega Nord. It translated regional identity into organized electoral politics.
Venetian autonomism: Advocacy for transferring powers from Italy’s central government to the Veneto region. It pursues self-government while leaving Italian sovereignty intact.
Veneto regional election, 2010: The 2010 election that made Luca Zaia of the Lega Nord president of Veneto. The result brought a regionalist party to the presidency and strengthened demands for autonomy.
Treaty of Campo Formio: The 1797 treaty in which France ceded former Venetian territories to the Habsburg monarchy. The treaty formalized the transfer of Venetian lands to foreign rule.
Liga Veneta Repubblica: A Venetian autonomist party founded in 1998 after breaking with the Lega Nord. Its republican name and platform made Venetian self-determination explicit in party politics.
