Venetian School

The Venetian School was a group of composers active in Venice from the late Renaissance into the early Baroque, known especially for polychoral music and expressive instrumental writing.

Polychoral music: Music composed for multiple choirs that perform together or in alternation, often from separate locations. Venetian composers used opposing choir groups to make musical space part of the composition.
Adrian Willaert: A Flemish composer who led music at St Mark’s Basilica from 1527 and helped shape Venetian musical life. His tenure established practices that later Venetian composers expanded.
Claudio Monteverdi: An Italian composer whose work spans late Renaissance polyphony and early Baroque opera and sacred music. His Venetian career connected the School’s legacy with emerging Baroque styles.
Venetian opera: Opera composed and performed in Venice, especially after public opera houses opened in the seventeenth century. Monteverdi’s later Venetian works carried local musical traditions into commercial opera.
