Vera Mukhina

Vera Mukhina (1889–1953) was a Soviet sculptor and artist whose monumental public works joined modernist form with Soviet imagery. Her best-known sculpture is Worker and Kolkhoz Woman.

Worker and Kolkhoz Woman: A monumental stainless-steel sculpture of a worker and a collective-farm woman striding forward with a hammer and sickle. This 1937 monument became Mukhina’s defining work and a lasting emblem of Soviet art.
Stainless steel: An iron-based alloy containing enough chromium to resist rust and corrosion. Its reflective surface gave her most famous monument a distinctive modern appearance.
