Verghese Kurien

Verghese Kurien was an Indian dairy engineer and social entrepreneur who helped transform India into a major milk producer by building farmer-owned dairy cooperatives, including Amul.

Operation Flood: An Indian dairy development program, launched in 1970, that expanded milk production and linked producers with urban markets. Kurien led the program that scaled the cooperative model across India.
Dairy cooperative: A farmer-owned organization that collects, processes, and markets members’ milk. This ownership structure put producers at the center of Kurien’s development model.
Anand, Gujarat: A city in Gujarat that became the center of India’s cooperative dairy movement. Kurien built his career and the cooperative institutions there.
Amrita Patel: An Indian veterinarian and dairy administrator who led the National Dairy Development Board after Kurien. Patel worked closely with Kurien and later continued the board’s cooperative dairy programs.

Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation: The federation that markets products from Gujarat’s district milk cooperatives under the Amul brand. Kurien helped establish the federation to coordinate marketing beyond individual districts.
Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union: A farmer-owned dairy union founded in Gujarat in 1946 and later known through the Amul brand. Kurien joined the union in 1949 and helped develop its processing and management.
H. M. Dalaya: An Indian dairy technologist who developed methods for making buffalo milk suitable for powder production. Dalaya’s technical work helped Amul process milk that conventional methods struggled to handle.
Private dairy company: A business that processes or sells dairy products under private ownership rather than producer ownership. Kurien’s model gave farmers collective ownership instead of leaving control with private processors.
