VHS

VHS is an analog videocassette format introduced by JVC in 1976. Its low-cost recorders, long recording times, and broad compatibility helped it dominate home video.

Helical scan: A magnetic-tape recording method in which rotating heads trace diagonal tracks across the tape. VHS uses rotating heads to record diagonal video tracks on moving tape.
JVC: A Japanese electronics company founded in 1927, known internationally as JVC. JVC developed VHS and launched the format in Japan in 1976.
Time shifting: Recording a broadcast or other scheduled program to watch at a later time. VHS made it practical for households to record television and watch it later.
Video 2000: A videocassette system developed by Philips and Grundig and sold in Europe from 1979. This technically distinctive European rival competed with VHS and Betamax.
VCR boom: The rapid spread of affordable videocassette recorders in homes during the late twentieth century. VHS's broad adoption helped turn the VCR into a common household appliance.
Magnetic tape: A storage medium that encodes information as magnetized patterns on a coated flexible strip. VHS stores picture and sound as magnetic patterns on a plastic tape.
Victor Company of Japan HR-3300: JVC's first VHS videocassette recorder, released in Japan in 1976. The HR-3300 introduced JVC's VHS system to consumers.
Home video: Video recorded or watched in domestic settings, including personal recordings and commercially released films. VHS became a central medium for domestic recording and film viewing.
LaserDisc: An optical videodisc format that stored analog video and digital or analog audio. LaserDisc offered higher-quality playback but lacked VHS's recording and rental convenience.
Video rental market: The business of renting prerecorded films and other video recordings to consumers. VHS cassettes made a large, reusable retail rental market possible.
