Vibraphone

A percussion instrument with tuned metal bars struck by mallets. Motor-driven fans above its resonator tubes periodically open and close the sound, producing a vibrato effect.

Resonator: A device or structure that strengthens selected frequencies by resonating with sound or vibration. Each bar’s tube-shaped resonator amplifies its fundamental pitch.
Mallet: A handheld implement with a head used to strike a surface or instrument. Mallet material and hardness change the attack and tone of the bars.
Henry Schluter: A German instrument maker credited with developing the modern vibraphone in the early twentieth century. Schluter’s design established the instrument’s tuned bars and resonator system.

Modern Jazz Quartet: An American jazz group known for combining small-group improvisation with chamber-music forms and presentation. Milt Jackson’s vibraphone was central to the quartet’s distinctive sound.
Damper pedal: A foot-operated control that raises or lowers a mechanism to stop or sustain vibrating instrument strings or bars. The pedal controls a felt bar that mutes the vibraphone’s bars when released.
Musical pitch: The perceived highness or lowness of a musical sound, associated with its frequency. Bar length and thickness determine the pitches arranged across the instrument.
