Viceroyalty of New Granada

A Spanish colonial administrative division in northern South America, established in the eighteenth century and centered on Bogotá. Its territories at different times included lands now in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama.

New Kingdom of Granada: A Spanish colonial province centered on Bogotá that preceded the Viceroyalty of New Granada. It supplied the viceroyalty’s core territory and capital.
Viceroy: A governor who represents a monarch and exercises delegated authority over a territory. The viceroy embodied the Crown’s executive authority in New Granada.
Comunero Revolt: A 1781 popular uprising in New Granada against taxation and other colonial policies. It exposed the political costs of Bourbon fiscal reforms.

Caracas: The capital of Venezuela and a major center of Spanish colonial administration. It became the center of a separate captaincy general within the region.
Viceroyalty of Peru: A Spanish colonial jurisdiction that governed much of western South America from Lima. New Granada’s creation reduced the vast territory once administered from Lima.
Spanish colonial administration: The institutions Spain used to govern its overseas territories. New Granada operated through this wider imperial system.
