Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata

A Spanish colonial territory established in 1776, governing much of present-day Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay until independence movements dissolved it.

Bourbon Reforms: Eighteenth-century measures that reorganized Spain and its empire to strengthen royal authority and increase revenue. The reforms supplied the administrative logic for creating a new southern viceroyalty.
Viceroy: A governor who exercises a monarch’s authority over a territory, especially in a colonial empire. The viceroy headed the territory’s royal administration and represented the Spanish crown.
British invasions of the Río de la Plata: British military attacks on Spanish South American possessions in 1806 and 1807. Local resistance weakened confidence in Spanish protection and strengthened Creole political initiative.
Santiago de Liniers: A French-born Spanish naval officer who served as viceroy of the Río de la Plata from 1807 to 1809. His leadership during the British invasions raised his standing before the 1810 crisis.
Viceroyalty of Peru: A Spanish colonial jurisdiction that governed much of western and central South America before later territorial reorganizations. Upper Peru belonged to this older viceroyalty before its transfer to the Río de la Plata.
Pedro de Cevallos: A Spanish military officer and colonial administrator who became the first viceroy of the Río de la Plata. His 1776 expedition helped establish Spanish control and the new administration.
Intendancy: A territorial administrative unit governed by an intendant, responsible for matters such as finance and justice. Intendancies reorganized provincial government and revenue collection within the viceroyalty.
May Revolution: The 1810 Buenos Aires uprising that displaced the Spanish viceroy and established a local governing junta. It ended effective viceregal rule in Buenos Aires and opened the independence process.
Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros: The Spanish naval officer who served as the last viceroy of the Río de la Plata from 1809 to 1810. His removal during the May Revolution marked the end of viceregal government in Buenos Aires.
United Provinces of the Río de la Plata: A revolutionary political entity formed after the May Revolution from provinces formerly governed by Spain. It claimed to succeed Spanish rule but never reunited all territories of the former viceroyalty.
