Victor Turner

Victor Turner (1920–1983) was a British cultural anthropologist known for studying ritual, symbols, and social transformation. His work developed influential accounts of liminality, communitas, and social drama.

Liminality: A condition of being between established social positions during a transition or ritual passage. Turner made this in-between phase central to his account of rites and social change.
Ndembu people: A Bantu-speaking people of northwestern Zambia whose rituals were studied by Turner. His fieldwork among the Ndembu supplied the ethnographic foundation for his theories.
Edmund Leach: A British social anthropologist known for structural analyses of kinship, myth, and ritual. Leach and Turner were prominent British anthropologists whose approaches to ritual differed.
