Victor Vasarely

Victor Vasarely (1906–1997) was a Hungarian-French artist whose geometric works create optical effects through color, pattern, and spatial ambiguity. He is widely regarded as a founder of Op art.

Op art: An art movement that uses optical illusions, geometric patterns, and visual instability to engage perception. Vasarely helped establish this movement through geometric works that make surfaces seem to move or shift.
Figure-ground perception: The visual process of separating a scene into a focal figure and its background. Ambiguous figure-ground relations make forms in his compositions seem to exchange places.
Sándor Bortnyik: A Hungarian painter and designer associated with modernist art and the Bauhaus-influenced Műhely school in Budapest. Vasarely studied at Bortnyik’s school, where modern design and geometric abstraction shaped his early work.
Zebra (Vasarely): A black-and-white composition by Vasarely in which curved bands suggest the form of zebras. Often treated as an early Op art work, it creates animal figures through alternating stripes.

Optical illusion: A visual experience in which perception differs from the physical properties of an image or scene. His compositions exploit discrepancies between what the eye sees and what the surface physically contains.
Grid (graphic design): A framework of intersecting lines used to organize elements in a visual composition. Regular grids let his forms repeat while controlled distortions make the surface appear to bend.
Műhely: A modern art and design school in Budapest founded by Sándor Bortnyik in 1928. Vasarely’s studies there connected him with Bauhaus-influenced teaching and practical design methods.
Vega (Vasarely): A series of Vasarely compositions in which geometric grids bulge or recede to suggest swelling volumes. The series makes flat, regular grids appear to expand into three-dimensional forms.
Op art fashion: Clothing and textiles that use high-contrast patterns associated with the visual language of Op art. The movement’s patterns entered popular fashion during the 1960s, extending the visual language Vasarely helped popularize.
