Victorian science

Victorian science was the expanding body of scientific institutions, practices, and theories in nineteenth-century Britain, shaped by professionalization, empire, industrialization, and public debate.

Charles Darwin: English naturalist whose theory of evolution by natural selection transformed biology. His evolutionary theory became Victorian science’s most contested account of life’s history.
British Association for the Advancement of Science: A British scientific society founded in 1831 to promote research and public discussion. Its annual meetings joined specialists, patrons, and the public in a national scientific forum.
On the Origin of Species: Charles Darwin’s 1859 book arguing that species evolve, chiefly through natural selection. Its publication made evolution a central test of scientific and religious authority.

University of London: A British university founded in 1836 that expanded access to examinations and degrees. Its examinations helped make scientific credentials available beyond older elite universities.
Uniformitarianism: The geological principle that present-day processes can explain Earth’s past. It offered a gradualist account of Earth’s history against appeals to sudden catastrophes.
