Video editing

Video editing selects and arranges recorded images and sound into a coherent sequence. It shapes timing, continuity, emphasis, and meaning through cuts, transitions, and other changes.

Continuity editing: A style of editing that makes cuts seem unobtrusive and preserves spatial and temporal coherence. Its rules help shots join into a continuous action.
Shot (filmmaking): A continuous piece of filmed or recorded action between edits. Shots are the basic units selected and arranged in an edit.
Nonlinear editing system: Software or hardware that lets editors access and rearrange media in any order. Nonlinear systems make modern timeline-based editing possible.
Linear video editing: An editing method that assembles video sequentially, typically by copying material from one tape to another. Its sequential workflow contrasts with rearrangeable digital timelines.
Match cut: An edit that links shots through a visual, movement, or sound correspondence. A match can bridge shots while preserving a meaningful resemblance.
Take: One recorded performance or attempt at a shot. Editors compare takes to choose the best material for a sequence.
Offline editing: A workflow that edits lower-resolution copies before reconnecting the original media for finishing. It keeps complex projects manageable before final-quality rendering.
Live television production: The creation and transmission of television programming as events unfold, with little or no postproduction editing. Live switching makes choices in real time instead of reshaping recorded footage later.
Jump cut: A cut between similar shots that creates a conspicuous discontinuity in time or position. Its visible rupture contrasts with continuity editing’s seamless flow.
Cut (transition): An abrupt transition from one shot or scene to another. Cuts are the fundamental transitions used to assemble sequences.
