Viet Cong

The Viet Cong was a communist-led insurgent movement in South Vietnam that fought the South Vietnamese government and its U.S. ally during the Vietnam War.

National Liberation Front: A political organization founded in South Vietnam in 1960 to oppose the government and pursue reunification under communist leadership. The front supplied the Viet Cong’s public political identity and organizational framework.
First Indochina War: The 1946–1954 war in which the Viet Minh fought France for control of Vietnam. Its end left unresolved conflicts that shaped the later insurgency in the south.
Ho Chi Minh: A Vietnamese communist revolutionary who led the independence struggle and became president of North Vietnam. His authority linked the movement’s national cause to the communist government in Hanoi.
Army of the Republic of Vietnam: The armed forces of South Vietnam, which fought communist forces during the Vietnam War. It was the Viet Cong’s principal South Vietnamese military adversary.
Fall of Saigon: The capture of Saigon by North Vietnamese forces on April 30, 1975, ending the Vietnam War. The victory completed the communist side’s defeat of South Vietnam, after the Viet Cong’s wartime role.
People's Army of Vietnam: The military forces of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, based in North Vietnam. It coordinated with Viet Cong forces and supplied troops, training, and military direction.
Viet Minh: A Vietnamese independence movement founded in 1941 and led by communists under Ho Chi Minh. Many Viet Cong cadres emerged from networks and experience built during the earlier struggle.
Vo Nguyen Giap: A Vietnamese general who commanded forces in the wars against France and the United States. His military strategy influenced the wider communist war effort that included Viet Cong forces.
United States Army: The land-warfare branch of the United States armed forces. U.S. forces fought the insurgency while supporting South Vietnam’s government.
Paris Peace Accords: The 1973 agreements intended to end the Vietnam War and establish a ceasefire in South Vietnam. The accords changed the military balance after U.S. combat forces withdrew.
