Vietnamese historiography

Vietnamese historiography is the study and writing of Vietnam’s past across successive scholarly and political traditions, from dynastic chronicles to modern academic history.

Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư: A Vietnamese dynastic chronicle compiled in the fifteenth century and expanded in later editions. Its court-centered account became a foundational source for later histories of Vietnam.
Dynastic history: Historical writing organized around successive ruling houses and their legitimacy, achievements, and failures. Vietnamese court chronicles used dynastic succession to structure accounts of the past.
Phan Bội Châu: A Vietnamese anticolonial activist and writer whose works recast national history as a call for independence. His histories connected accounts of the past to the political struggle against French rule.
Colonial historiography: Historical writing shaped by colonial institutions, assumptions, and representations of colonized societies. French colonial scholarship often framed Vietnam through categories challenged by Vietnamese historians.
Lê Văn Hưu: A thirteenth-century Vietnamese historian who compiled the first known official history of Đại Việt. His lost chronicle began the tradition of state-sponsored Vietnamese historical writing.
Annals: Chronological records that list events year by year, often organized by a ruler’s reign. Vietnamese official histories often arranged political events in an annalistic sequence.
Trần Trọng Kim: A Vietnamese scholar and politician who published influential historical and educational works in the early twentieth century. His concise national history brought a modern Vietnamese narrative to a broad readership.
Marxist historiography: Historical interpretation that emphasizes class relations, material conditions, and social conflict. Its influence is especially visible in state histories of revolution and social transformation.
Ngô Sĩ Liên: A fifteenth-century Vietnamese court historian and principal compiler of Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư. His compilation gave dynastic history a durable form and a moral framework.
Confucian historiography: Historical writing shaped by Confucian moral judgments about rulers, officials, and political order. Court historians used moral evaluation to explain dynastic success and collapse.
