Vietnamization

Vietnamization was the Nixon administration’s policy of shifting combat responsibilities in the Vietnam War to South Vietnamese forces while withdrawing U.S. troops.

Army of the Republic of Vietnam: The armed forces of South Vietnam, which fought North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces until 1975. These forces were expected to assume combat duties as U.S. troops left.
Richard Nixon: The 37th president of the United States, serving from 1969 to 1974. Nixon announced Vietnamization as his administration’s approach to ending U.S. combat involvement.
Kent State shootings: The killing of four students by Ohio National Guard troops during a 1970 antiwar protest. The Cambodia expansion accompanying Vietnamization triggered protests that culminated in the shootings.

Rolling Thunder: A sustained U.S. bombing campaign against North Vietnam from 1965 to 1968. The campaign represents an earlier emphasis on direct American escalation rather than troop transfer.
Operation Menu: A secret U.S. bombing campaign against North Vietnamese sanctuaries in Cambodia from 1969 to 1970. The campaign extended the war into Cambodia while Vietnamization was shifting ground combat responsibilities.
Vietnam War: A war from 1955 to 1975 between North Vietnam and its allies and South Vietnam and its allies. The policy sought to change U.S. participation in this wider conflict.
