Vijayanagara Empire
A South Indian empire founded in 1336, centered on Vijayanagara, that ruled much of the Deccan and southern India until the 17th century.
Harihara I: The first ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire, who established its authority in the 14th century. He founded the dynasty whose early expansion turned a regional power into an empire.
Nayaka system: A system in which military chiefs held territorial assignments in return for troops, revenue, and service to a ruler. Vijayanagara delegated local power to nayakas while relying on them for military support and tribute.
Krishnadevaraya: A Tuluva dynasty ruler who governed Vijayanagara from 1509 to 1529 and led it during a period of expansion. His campaigns, court, and building projects represent the empire’s celebrated high point.
Nayaka kingdoms: Regional states in southern India ruled by former Vijayanagara military governors and their successors. They inherited authority and territorial structures as imperial control weakened after Talikota.
Bukka Raya I: A 14th-century ruler of Vijayanagara who expanded the kingdom founded by his brother Harihara I. His reign consolidated the new state and extended its reach across southern India.
Amara-nayaka system: Vijayanagara’s arrangement granting military chiefs revenue rights over territories in exchange for service to the king. It linked provincial revenue extraction to the armies that sustained imperial campaigns.
Battle of Talikota: A 1565 battle in which a coalition of Deccan Sultanates defeated Vijayanagara’s forces. The defeat shattered the imperial capital’s security and accelerated political fragmentation.
Vijayanagara architecture: The architectural traditions of the Vijayanagara period, visible in temples, markets, fortifications, and royal complexes. Its monumental building program shaped later temple centers across southern India.
Sangama dynasty: The first ruling dynasty of the Vijayanagara Empire, founded by Harihara I and Bukka Raya I. It governed the empire through its formative century and established its initial institutions.
Vijayanagara military: The land and naval forces maintained by Vijayanagara rulers and their subordinate chiefs. Its armies combined royal forces with contingents supplied by regional commanders.
