Vinaya Piṭaka

The Vinaya Piṭaka is the part of the Buddhist canon that records monastic rules, disciplinary procedures, and accounts explaining how rules arose.

Pātimokkha: A recitation text listing the principal rules governing Buddhist monks or nuns. Its rule lists form the core of the Vinaya’s disciplinary framework.
Uposatha: A Buddhist observance day associated with communal practice and, in monastic settings, recitation of disciplinary rules. Regular recitation makes the rules a shared practice rather than a private code.
First Buddhist Council: A traditional gathering of early Buddhist disciples said to have recited and organized the Buddha’s teachings after his death. Traditions connect the early preservation of monastic discipline with this council.
Dharmaguptaka Vinaya: The monastic discipline text preserved in the Dharmaguptaka Buddhist tradition. It is a distinct Vinaya lineage still used in several East Asian ordination traditions.
Bhikkhu: A fully ordained Buddhist monk, especially in Theravāda usage. The Vinaya specifies the duties and disciplinary rules governing monks.
Saṅgha: The Buddhist monastic community, especially the community of ordained monks and nuns. The Vinaya regulates this community and assigns it collective procedures.
Saṅghakamma: A formal act of a Buddhist monastic community performed according to prescribed procedures. The Vinaya defines valid procedures for collective decisions and disciplinary acts.
Second Buddhist Council: A traditional Buddhist assembly remembered for disputes over monastic practice and discipline. Accounts of disciplinary disagreements associate this council with early community divisions.
Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya: A large monastic discipline collection associated with the Mūlasarvāstivāda school. Its extensive recension contrasts with other surviving Vinaya collections.
Bhikkhunī: A fully ordained Buddhist nun. The Vinaya includes rules and procedures governing the nuns’ order.
