Vinyl acetate

Vinyl acetate is the organic ester CH₃COOCH=CH₂, used chiefly as a monomer in the production of polyvinyl acetate and other polymers.

Free-radical polymerization: A chain-growth process in which reactive radicals add successively to unsaturated monomers. Vinyl acetate is commonly converted into polymers through radical chain growth.
Adhesive: A substance that joins surfaces by forming an interfacial bond. Polyvinyl acetate made from this monomer is a common adhesive ingredient.
Ester: An organic compound containing a carbonyl group bonded to an oxygen atom that is bonded to carbon. Vinyl acetate is an ester formed from acetic acid and vinyl alcohol.
Chemical industry: The sector that manufactures chemicals and chemical-derived materials at industrial scale. Vinyl acetate is a major feedstock in large-scale polymer manufacturing.
Polyvinyl acetate: A polymer made by polymerizing vinyl acetate, used in adhesives, coatings, and other products. This is the principal polymer produced directly from the monomer.
Wood glue: An adhesive formulated to bond wood, often using a polyvinyl acetate emulsion. Vinyl acetate polymerization supplies the binder in many common wood glues.
Vinyl group: The ethenyl substituent, –CH=CH₂, containing a reactive carbon–carbon double bond. Its vinyl group enables chain-growth polymerization of the molecule.
Occupational exposure: Contact with potentially harmful substances during work activities. Workers may inhale vinyl acetate vapor during its manufacture or handling.
Polyvinyl alcohol: A water-soluble synthetic polymer made by hydrolyzing polyvinyl acetate or related polymers. Hydrolysis of vinyl-acetate-derived polymer chains produces this useful material.
Latex paint: A water-based paint containing polymer particles dispersed in water. Vinyl acetate copolymers can serve as binders in water-based paints.
