Violent crime

Violent crime involves the use or threat of physical force against a person. Its legal definition and included offenses vary across jurisdictions.

Assault: An offense involving an intentional threat or use of force against another person, as defined by law. Assault commonly involves threatened or attempted force, even when no physical injury occurs.
Intimidation: The use of threats or pressure to make another person afraid or comply. Threats can constitute violence in law or crime statistics even without physical contact.
Uniform Crime Reports: A United States crime-data program that compiles offenses reported by law enforcement agencies. Its traditional Part I categories include several offenses commonly classified as violent crime.
Property crime: Crime involving interference with property, typically without direct force or threat against a person. It contrasts with violent crime by focusing on property rather than force against people.
Robbery: The taking of property from a person through force or threat of force. Robbery combines property taking with force against a person.
Weapon: An object designed or used to injure, kill, or threaten a person. Weapons can increase the capacity for harm and affect the seriousness of an offense.
National Crime Victimization Survey: A United States survey that estimates crime victimization, including incidents not reported to police. It captures violent victimization that police-based records can miss.
White-collar crime: Nonviolent crime committed in occupational or professional settings, often for financial gain. Its harms can be substantial despite lacking the direct physical force central to violent crime.
Homicide: The killing of one person by another; its legal categories include both lawful and criminal acts. Criminal homicide is a severe form of interpersonal violence, though not every homicide is a crime.
Situational crime prevention: An approach that reduces crime by changing immediate settings and opportunities. Environmental changes can make violent encounters harder to initiate or escalate.
