Virgil

Virgil was a Roman poet of the first century BCE whose works include the pastoral Eclogues, the agricultural Georgics, and the epic Aeneid. His poetry shaped Latin literature and later European ideas of epic and empire.

Aeneid: Virgil’s epic poem follows the Trojan hero Aeneas from the fall of Troy to his settlement in Italy. This unfinished epic is Virgil’s best-known work and his account of Rome’s legendary origins.
Roman Republic: The period of ancient Roman government before the establishment of the Roman Empire under Augustus. Virgil’s life and early poetry unfolded as the Republic’s political order collapsed.
Maecenas: A Roman statesman and patron of poets, including Virgil and Horace. Maecenas supported Virgil and connected his poetry to the cultural circle around Augustus.
Latin literature: Literature composed in Latin from antiquity through later historical periods. Virgil became one of Latin literature’s most studied and influential poets.

Battle of Philippi: The 42 BCE battles in which Mark Antony and Octavian defeated the forces of Brutus and Cassius. The aftermath of the civil wars forms part of the political background to Virgil’s early career.
Horace: A Roman poet of the first century BCE, known for lyric poems, satires, and epistles. Horace shared Virgil’s literary milieu and patronage network, though he cultivated different poetic forms.
Augustan literature: The Latin literature produced during the reign of Augustus and its surrounding period. Virgil’s major poems are central works of this literary era and engage with its politics.
Lucan: A Roman poet of the first century CE, known for the historical epic Pharsalia. Lucan’s anti-imperial civil-war epic challenges the political vision associated with Virgil’s Aeneid.
