Vistula–Oder Offensive

A Soviet strategic offensive from January to February 1945 that broke out from bridgeheads on the Vistula and advanced across Poland to the Oder River in Germany.

Sandomierz Bridgehead: A Soviet-held area west of the Vistula River in southeastern Poland, captured in 1944 and used as a staging ground for the January 1945 offensive. The 1st Ukrainian Front launched its southern thrust from this bridgehead.
Operation Bagration: A Soviet summer 1944 offensive that destroyed much of Germany’s Army Group Centre in Belarus. Its destruction of German forces weakened the Eastern Front before the Vistula–Oder advance.
Georgy Zhukov: A Soviet military commander who led major operations on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. He commanded the 1st Belorussian Front during its drive from the Vistula to the Oder.

Ivan Konev: A Soviet general who commanded major formations on the Eastern Front during the Second World War. He led the 1st Ukrainian Front’s advance from the Sandomierz Bridgehead.
Battle of Poznań: A siege and battle in January and February 1945 in which Soviet forces captured the German-held city of Poznań. The fortress city resisted the advance after Soviet troops bypassed it toward the Oder.
1st Belorussian Front: A major Soviet wartime formation that conducted operations on the central sector of the Eastern Front. Its forces drove through Warsaw and toward the Oder on the offensive’s northern axis.
Warsaw Uprising: A 1944 armed uprising by the Polish resistance against German occupation in Warsaw. Its defeat preceded the Soviet capture of Warsaw during the offensive.
