Vito Volterra

Vito Volterra (1860–1940) was an Italian mathematician and physicist whose work shaped functional analysis, integral equations, and mathematical biology.

Lotka–Volterra equations: A pair of differential equations modeling interactions between two populations, commonly predators and prey. These equations carry Volterra’s mathematical account of predator–prey dynamics into a widely used model.
Integral equation: An equation in which an unknown function appears under an integral sign. Volterra’s named equation is one important class within this broader family.
University of Pisa: A public research university in Pisa, Italy, founded in 1343. Volterra studied and later taught mathematics at this university.
